The Life/Work Balance

Ah yes, the life/work balance.  As any readers of this blog can tell you, I haven’t yet mastered this skill.  It’s been a while between posts, but, there are many good reasons for that.  For starters, it was summer.  I like summer.  I spent more time outside this summer than any before.  (Yes, there are web developers who like the sun!).  Of course, the active lifestyle can be quite conflicting to the web developer.  Why?  It takes a time to gain strong development experience.  A lot of time. Web 2.0 - What It Means to Real People

Actually, the title of this article is somewhat incorrect, since web developers are real people too, but for the purposes of this blog, they won’t be considered!

Most ‘web aware’ people have heard the term Web 2.0, and if you haven’t, relax, you may not have heard it, but chances are it’s probably something quite important to you and the site you want. Web 2.0 is basically a buzz word for a website that is dynamic, where it’s content can be altered and updated without having to update the whole website. Web 2.0 is a broad term and usually it’s definition encompasses several other concepts to, but the concept of a dynamically updated webpage is what we care about. What does this mean for a website owner? With a Web 2.0 site, the client can be in charge of updating their site when they want, at their convenience, without having to send small updates to a paid professional.

Making Good Websites

Having worked on large web projects for the University of Calgary campus, I’ve learned first hand how ugly html code can get. Maintaining cross-browser compatibility only adds to the chaos as different browsers have their own nitpicking in rendering certain properties in certain doc types. What that essentially means is that the code can get, for lack of a better word, out-of-hand. A great site to make sure your code is still written properly is The W3C Markup Validation Service.

The Elusive Web Loading Icon

Happy New Year first and foremost. I should make a resolution to be a better blogger, as it’s been a while since my last post. I’ve been hard at work on a couple projects, one being the new version of www.cmcbmusic.com, and the second being a webpage for a local Calgary artist.

Open Source, a Developer’s Best Friend

One of the first things I’ve learned during my time spent in the web development world is that ‘open source’ are the two greatest words in the English language to a developer, or at least to this developer. Open source software is software, with all the juicy source code, available online to use and abuse all for the handsome price tag of no dollars. If knowledge is power, than open source software is power to the people.

Welcome to the Blog!

I’ve decided to whip up this little blog for dmcbdesign.com to shed a little light on all things development that go on here. While the main page of this site looks pretty and gives an idea of our mission statement, this blog will give a little behind the scenes look on the latest projects I’m working on, tips and tricks I’ve learned on my digital travels, or late night ramblings that might appeal to all the other web heads out there.
